JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Sebanyak 24 klub dari tiga negara akan mengikuti kejuaraan Sofbol Giants Cup IV yang akan digelar pada 16-19 Februari di Senayan, Jakarta. Kejuaraan ini bakal berlangsung ketat karena semua tim dibebaskan merekrut pemain tanpa ikatan kontrak jangka panjang.
Kejuaraan ini digelar untuk memperingati ulang tahun kelima klub Jakarta Giants. "Dengan pertandingan ini, kami ingin menunjukkan permainan sofbol yang bermutu dan berharap minat warga terhadap olahraga sofbol meningkat," kata Pandu Satrio Nugroho, ketua panitia kejuaraan Giants Cup IV, Minggu (12/2/2012) di Jakarta.
Kejuaraan ini akan dibagi dalam tiga kategori, yakni putra terbuka, putri terbuka, dan putra di bawah 23 tahun (U-23). Pada kategori putra terbuka, tujuh tim akan berpartisipasi, termasuk tim HKSA dari Hongkong. Pada kategori putri terbuka, delapan tim akan berpartisipasi.
Adapun pada kategori putra U-23, sembilan tim bakal bersaing menjadi juara, termasuk dua tim mahasiswa Malaysia, Malaysia MPS dan Malaysia Polimas. Dua tim bermaterikan para pemain PON yang akan bertanding di PON Riau, akhir tahun ini.
Kedua tim itu adalah tim Sriti yang bermaterikan pemain Jawa Timur dan tim putri Papua Barat. beberapa pemain putri Papua Barat juga menjadi pemain tim nasional.
